The Winter Split: Why Outdoor Kitchens Need Armoured Electrics

The Power Problem
You cannot run an outdoor kitchen off a cheap extension lead plugged into the garage wall.
A proper electric pizza oven or commercial grill pulls massive wattage. When you add a glass-fronted fridge and some heavy-duty patio heating, you are drawing more power than a standard household ring main wants to handle. If your builder just buried a bit of white indoor flex three inches under the soil, the second you switch the grill on, your whole house goes dark.
We don't cut corners on the feed. We dig a proper trench and lay thick, steel-wire armoured (SWA) cable straight from your main house fuse board out to the garden. That feeds a dedicated, waterproof sub-board built right into the blockwork frame of the kitchen. Every appliance gets its own breaker, keeping it completely safe and legal.
The January Freeze
Getting water out to your garden sink is easy. Stopping it from destroying your masonry over the winter is where most builders mess up.
When the temperature drops across Dorset in the winter, the frost gets right into the stone. If your water lines and taps are left full of water, that water turns to solid ice. Ice expands, and it will split a copper or plastic pipe right down the seam.
You won't even know it's happened until April. The first time you turn the mains tap back on for a spring barbecue, water will start pouring out from behind the rendering because the pipes cracked months ago.
The Drain-Down Valve

When we run the blue MDPE water pipe from the house, we don't just patch it into the tap. We install an isolation stopcock and a dedicated drain-off valve inside your house or a heated garage space.
Come November, you turn the main valve off, walk outside, and open the kitchen taps wide. Every drop of sitting water drains right out of the pipework. The lines sit bone-dry all winter. When the ground freezes solid in January, there’s nothing inside the pipes to swell up and break.
