The Wi-Fi Deadzone: Why Your Garden Office Needs a CAT6 Trench

I get called out to these all the time. Someone drops twenty-five grand on a custom garden office in Poole. They move the expensive desks in, set up the monitors, and sit down for a Monday morning video call.
The connection drops dead.
The bloke who threw the shed up probably told you to stick a twenty-quid Wi-Fi booster plug in the wall. Utter rubbish. Five minutes into a meeting, the screen freezes. The call dies. You end up dragging your laptop straight back into the kitchen just to get a signal.
Here is why your expensive new office is a total internet deadzone.
The Foil Trap
Proper garden studios are built using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). They are incredible for holding the heat in January. But that thick insulation is lined with heavy foil backing.
When you build a room out of foil-backed panels, you are essentially building a Faraday cage at the bottom of your garden. It kills wireless signals completely. The Wi-Fi signal from your house router hits the outside walls of your new studio and bounces straight off. Nothing gets inside.
The Amazon Booster Myth
Most lads putting these rooms up haven't got a clue about data. They just shrug and tell you to order a plug-in booster off Amazon.
Total waste of cash.
Those powerline plugs lag like mad the second you jump on a video call. And a standard Wi-Fi repeater? It’s just grabbing a rubbish signal and spitting it back out. If you actually need to run a business out there, you can't be messing around hoping a weak signal makes it through your house bricks and the foil panels.
The Armoured Trench
There is only one way to get proper, reliable internet to a garden studio. You have to hardwire it.
When we do the groundworks for a new build, we dig a deep trench for the mains electric. While that trench is open, we lay a dedicated, steel-wire armoured (SWA) CAT6 data cable right next to the power line. We run it straight from the back of your home router, under the dirt, directly into a proper ethernet faceplate inside the studio.
You get full gigabit internet speeds. Exactly the same as sitting next to the router in your living room. No buffering. No deadzones.
