It happens because cheap landscapers keep nailing up solid wooden panels. Down here on the coast, that is a complete waste of time.
The £30 Sail
If you buy a standard feather-edge fence panel for thirty quid and slot it between two posts, you haven't built a boundary. You’ve built a massive wooden sail.
When a coastal gale hits a solid panel, the wind has nowhere to go. It just slams dead into the wood. The pressure builds up fast. If the wind can't get through the fence, it has to take the posts with it.
Most cheap timber posts are already rotting at the soil line anyway. The wind hits the panel, the weak wood snaps at the base, and your entire garden boundary ends up in the neighbour’s driveway.
The Aerodynamic Fix
We do not use cheap solid panels for bespoke garden boundaries. We build heavy duty fencing in Bournemouth using actual engineering.
We use a system called "hit and miss" slatted timber screens.
Instead of one solid sheet of wood, we fix premium timber slats horizontally to the front of the posts, leaving a gap between each one. Then we fix another row of slats to the back of the posts, covering the gaps from the other side.
When a winter gale hits it, the wind doesn't smash into a solid wall. It weaves straight through the gaps between the timber. The pressure vanishes. The fence doesn't budge an inch.
Total Privacy
People think a slatted fence means the neighbours can see in. They can't.
Because the boards overlap back-to-front, it gives you 100% visual privacy. You can't see through it. But the wind easily finds its way through the empty space. You get the look of high-end coastal windproof fencing, and it actually survives the winter.
