I drive past these all the time around Bournemouth. Someone pays a landscaper for a brand-new gravel driveway. A month later, half the stone is scattered across the public pavement.
Dumping ten tonnes of loose shingle onto a sheet of black plastic isn't building a driveway. It’s just making a mess.

The Dump and Run
Let me tell you how cheap builders lay gravel.
They scrape off the top layer of grass, roll out a flimsy weed membrane, and back a massive lorry up to drop a load of pea shingle straight on top. They rake it flat, take your cash, and leave.
It does not work. Loose gravel has zero structural integrity. The second you drive a heavy modern car onto it, the tyres push the stones out of the way. Within weeks, you are left with two deep, muddy ruts. Every time you pull out, the tyre treads drag the stone right into the street.
The Council Problem
Driveway gravel migrating into the road isn't just annoying. It's a massive hazard.
Loose stones on a public pavement act like marbles. People slip on them, and the local council will absolutely come after you for blocking the highway. You spend half your weekend out there with a stiff broom trying to sweep your driveway back onto your property.
The Cellular Grid Fix
If you want a gravel driveway, you have to trap the stone. We do not just dump shingle.
First, we dig the site out properly and compact a heavy MOT Type 1 sub-base so the ground won't sink. Then, we lay down heavy-duty cellular paving.
These are massive, interlocking plastic honeycomb mats. We lock them together across the entire driveway and then fill the hexagonal cells with a sharp, angular gravel. The stone drops into the grid and gets completely trapped.
When you drive on it, your tyres are actually rolling on the high-strength plastic grid, not the loose stone. It completely stops gravel movement. You can put full steering lock on a heavy 4x4, turn the wheels right on the spot, and you won't move a single pebble.
It also makes it a fully SUDS-compliant permeable driveway. Rainwater drains straight through the cells into the earth. No puddles, no ruts, no sweeping the pavement.
